Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker at the age of a little girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she quit school in the span of two years in order to pursue an acting career. Her path wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she wanted eluded. She then worked as an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. There, she made the ends meet by working as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. The study of drama helped her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
